Wilshere relishing chance to prove Arsenal wrong as West Ham head to the Emirates

The midfielder was allowed to leave the Gunners as a free agent over the summer and is now preparing for a reunion after linking up with West Ham

Jack Wilshere is determined to prove Arsenal “were wrong to get rid of me”, with the West Ham midfielder preparing for a Premier League reunion with his former club.

Having been associated with the Gunners for 17 years, the England international walked away from north London as a free agent over the summer.

Unai Emery’s arrival at Emirates Stadium saw Wilshere opt against signing fresh terms, with the 26-year-old seeking a new challenge.

He has found that with West Ham and will be looking to “prove a point” to those who let him go when his path crosses with Arsenal again on Saturday.

Wilshere told the Hammers’ matchday programme: “First of all, I've got to concentrate on football and I quite fancy our chances. I obviously know them really well.

“They've got a new manager, but I know the players, so hopefully it'll be a good time to play them.

“It'll be a strange one for me as I was never able to go there and play when I went out on loan as you can play against your parent club, but it's one I'm looking forward to.

“It's down to me to prove a point to Arsenal that they were wrong to get rid of me.”

Wilshere has not enjoyed the best of starts to his time in new surroundings.

West Ham, who spent much of last season fending off the threat of relegation, have opened their 2018-19 campaign with back-to-back defeats.

Arsenal have done likewise – coming unstuck against Manchester City and Chelsea – so there will be an opportunity at Emirates Stadium this weekend for both teams to open their respective accounts.
