VIDEO: I went through it all to be a champion – Marcos Senna

Former Villarreal midfielder Marcos Senna says one ‘could write a book’ about all the hardships he had to overcome to become a champion.

The Brazil-born former Spain international made almost 300 La Liga appearances for the Yellow Submarine and also played a pivotal role in La Furia Roja’s Euro 2008 success.

A leading La Liga star for more than a decade, he carved out a special history in Spain’s top flight, but experienced his fair share of difficulties before being able to enjoy his success.

“I’ve experienced some very tough moments in my life,” Marcos Senna told official La Liga sponsor, Clear Men.

“I’ve had to show so much mental strength since I was little, given I was from a country where a large percentage of people are poor.

“I was also in that group. In Brazil there is a saying that you have to ‘kill a lion every day’, and I had to kill a lion every day.”

During his time in Castellon, Marcos Senna lined up alongside club legend Santi Cazorla, who himself has had to battle through trying times.

Cazorla lost a significant portion of his career to injuries, including an infection that devoured a full 10cm of tendon, and he once went over 600 days on the sidelines.

“Santo Cazorla went through two years of hell,” Marcos Senna continued.

“He showed incredible mental strength and is now able to play again.”

Relegation-threatened Villarreal will have to draw on all that mental strength if they are claw their way back up the La Liga table in the final stages of this season.
