RUMOURS: Manchester United to make January move for Jose Fonte

The Euro 2016 winner turned down a pay rise at Southampton and could be ready to leave St Mary's in January with fellow countryman Jose Mourinho leading the chase

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho will make Southampton central defender Jose Fonte his first January signing, according to a report in the Sunday People.

Reports have been circulating for some time about Fonte being a target for United but as we approach the January transfer window, rumours of a switch to Old Trafford are only likely to intensify.

32-year-old Fonte has 18 months left to run on his current contract at St Mary's and turned down a pay rise offered to him after returning from a triumphant Euro 2016 campaign with Portugal.

Fonte says he was offered a wage increase but not a new contract extenstion and that stumbling block could see him looking for a move away in January.
