Revealed: What Klopp told Shaqiri after Liverpool's League Cup exit

Xherdan Shaqiri has lifted the lid on what Jurgen Klopp told him after Liverpool’s 2-1 Carabao Cup defeat against Chelsea in midweek.

A late goal from Eden Hazard won the match for the Blues, setting them up perfectly for the Premier League rematch on Saturday at Stamford Bridge and ensuring that the Reds lost their perfect start to the season.

The manager was seen giving the Swiss winger a dressing down on the pitch in the immediate aftermath of the game, but Shaqiri insists it was nothing serious, referencing a late free kick that he didn’t even take.

Speaking to the Evening Standard, he said: “He was not intense or shouting something. It was just a tactical thing, like something off the free-kick we should do better.

“In the end, Jordan Henderson took the free-kick and it was maybe not the best solution we did there.”

This information was backed up by Klopp during his press conference on Friday.

“German newspapers said I had an argument with Shaqiri on the pitch. I didn't. It was only about that free-kick,” the manager said.

Days earlier, Shaqiri had been replaced early during Liverpool’s 3-0 Premier League win over Southampton, which was a move that caught him off guard.

“I was surprised to be honest. But it’s the solution of the coach so you have to understand this.

“He came to me straight away and said why. I have a very good relationship with him so everything is okay.”

Indeed, Klopp has since moved to reassure the Switzerland international star, who moved to Anfield from Stoke City during the transfer window.

“He’s very, very good,” the ex-Dortmund boss continued. “When he came in, that was what I wanted from him. I didn't want to fill him with information about the way he defends etc, I wanted him only to play football.”

Since arriving in the summer, Shaqiri has played 167 minutes for the Reds over five matches. He has yet to score or make an assist, however, he did manage to earn his first full run out for the club against Chelsea on Wednesday.
