Neymar has been at the heart of the build-up to this game, with major question marks over the world’s most expensive player’s ability to feature in what promises to be a defining encounter for Paris Saint-Germain.

Head coach Thomas Tuchel affirmed on Tuesday that neither the Brazil ace nor Kylian Mbappe will feel any effect from recent problems picked up on international duty, though doubts remain as to just how fit the former can be after sustaining a thigh strain that in normal circumstances would have seen him laid up for a fortnight.

But needs must for the Parisian side. A 3-2 loss against Liverpool at Anfield might have been followed by a thumping home win over Red Star Belgrade, but a couple of draws against Napoli have left them in a perilous position, staring down the barrel of Europa League football with a single slip.

The 1-1 draw in Naples earlier this month was an especially frustrating affair, as Juan Bernat had given them the lead only for it to be ceded midway through the second half.

Like PSG, Liverpool have not made their life easy after that spectacular home performance in September.

They have already lost away fixtures at Napoli and Red Star Belgrade, without even scoring a goal, and a third defeat could consign last season’s runners-up to an embarrassing early exit.

There is much on the line for both teams, one of which is liable to find themselves playing in the Europa League come spring.
