Portugal vs Ukraine Betting Tips: Latest odds, team news, preview and predictions

Defending champions Portugal begin their Euro 2020 qualifying campaign at Benfica's Estadio da Luz on Friday evening against Ukraine.

Fernando Santos' side are unbeaten since the World Cup with three wins and three draws from their last six games, a run which saw them top their UEFA Nations League group.

The visitors to the Portuguese capital also finished top of their group in the Nations League, albeit in League B, recording three wins from their four matches.

Latest odds

William Hill offer a home win at 19/50 (1.38), with Portugal unbeaten in competitive games on home soil since 2014. Ukraine are available at 15/2 (8.50) to record what would be a surprise victory, while the draw can be backed at 9/2 (4.50)

Team news

Captain Cristiano Ronaldo returns to the Portugal squad for the first time since the World Cup. There are also recalls for Jose Fonte and Joao Moutinho while Benfica's teenage star Joao Felix is called up for the first time.

Ukraine coach Andriy Shevchenko could hand a debut to Brazilian-born striker Junior Moraes, with the Shakhtar Donetsk forward recently granted a Ukranian passport.

Preview

The return of Ronaldo to the Portugal team will be a huge boost to the European champions. They did score in five of the six games they played without him, yet his presence will provide the kind of firepower that should be able to see off Ukraine.

However, it is not just the five-time Ballon d'Or winner who can cause the visitors problems, with Bernardo Silva, Goncalo Guedes, Andre Silva and Joao Felix all adding to one of Portugal's most exciting and talented squads in recent memory.

With a strong home record and an impressive selection of players at their disposal, the hosts should be backed to get the defence of their European crown off to a winning start.

Tips and predictions

Portugal half time/full time is priced at 23/20 (2.15) and if we think the hosts will be too strong on Friday, this is a good angle from which to back them. This selection has paid out in six of their last eight wins and offers a good value option for the game in Lisbon.
