Next Manchester United Manager Betting: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer odds-on to be given permanent role

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been cut to 4/5 (1.80) to be Manchester United manager on the first day of next season after his eighth consecutive win as interim coach.

The Norwegian led his side to an impressive 3-1 win at Arsenal in the FA Cup on Friday night to make it eight victories from as many games since taking charge on December 19.

He was 6/4 (2.50) prior to Friday, slightly ahead of Mauricio Pochettino at 2/1 (3.0) who has remained the same price in William Hill’s market.

Pochettino’s chances of winning a trophy this season have dwindled dramatically in the last week, with Tottenham first crashing out of the Carabao Cup at Chelsea before losing 2-0 to Crystal Palace in the FA Cup.

The Argentine downplayed the significance of winning trophies, though, saying after the defeat to Palace: “I don't agree with it. It only builds your ego. The most important thing for Tottenham right now is to always be in the top four.”

With Harry Kane and Dele Alli both out of action until March, a top four finish is far from certain and should Spurs not qualify for the Champions League next season, the lure of the Red Devils may be too much for Pochettino to resist.

Solskjaer, however, will be determined to continue making his case for the permanent role and could well force the club into a headache-inducing summer if he is able to lead United to a top four finish.

United face a season-defining run of games in the coming weeks, facing Paris Saint-Germain twice, Liverpool, Crystal Palace, Arsenal and Manchester City all within the space of around five weeks.

A string of good results in that span could see Solskjaer’s odds shorten even more, although it remains to be seen if the board opt to go with the more experienced Pochettino or an alternative candidate.

Elsewhere in the market, Zinedine Zidane, Massimiliano Allegri, and Gareth Southgate are all 10/1 (11.0) whilst Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone can be backed at 16/1 (17.0).
