Mustafi reveals Manchester United icon Rio Ferdinand is his defensive idol

The Germany international has lifted the lid on which defender he drew inspiration from as a youngster growing up watching the game


Shkodran Mustafi has revealed that former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand is his defensive idol.

Mustafi, who spent four years in England playing for Everton as a youngster, grew up watching the centre-back ply his trade for the likes of Leeds and Manchester United.

The 24-year-old possesses similar defensive attributes to the former England man and claims he “had everything a defender needed”.

He also revealed his other footballing idols with the likes of Zinedine Zidane and Ronaldinho featuring prominently on his list of all-time greats.

“I loved watching Zidane. I loved watching Ronaldinho and when I became a defender I loved Ferdinand," Mustafi told Goal.

“He was always there, screaming, tackling playing. He had everything a defender needed."

Mustafi has yet to lose a game during his first few months at Arsenal and is part of a back four which has conceded just 19 goals in 20 matches.
