Milner matches Beckham's Premier League assist record

James Milner is matching some of the best players the Premier League has ever seen when it comes to assists.

The England international registered the 80th assist of his career in the English top flight when his excellent delivery from a corner was headed home by Roberto Firmino to put Liverpool 2-0 up at Leicester City on Saturday.

That brings the 32-year-old up to seventh in the Premier League's al-time assist charts and level with Manchester United great David Beckham.

Although the two may be level on pure numbers, it has taken Milner over 220 appearances more to reach the tally than the Three Lions hero, who left England for lucrative spells abroad.

Also, Milner put his record together over spells at Aston Villa, Newcastle, Manchester City and Liverpool, whereas Beckham played for just one team in England.

Milner is looking comfortable in the Liverpool midfield this season with two assists already, but he still has a long way to go before he can catch up with a real Reds legend in Steven Gerrard, who finished his career with 92 assists to his name.

Arsenal great Dennis Bergkamp sits two ahead of Gerrard, while Frank Lampard (on 102), Wayne Rooney (103) and Cesc Fabregas, who has 111, are all behind Ryan Giggs, who made an incredible 162 during his iconic time at Man United.

With Milner contracted to Liverpool until 2019, this could be the last year in which he can climb further up the chart.
