Marcos Alonso signs new Chelsea deal until 2023

Chelsea have confirmed that left-back Marcos Alonso has committed his long-term future to the club by signing a new deal until 2023.

The Spanish defender has enjoyed an excellent season thus far and has become a mainstay at full-back under new manager Maurizio Sarri, having already proved himself under Antonio Conte previously.

Since joining the club from Fiorentina in 2016, Alonso has made 92 appearances for the club, scoring 15 goals and providing 11 assists, both as a wing-back and a full-back.

"I am so happy to stay here longer and to keep playing for one of the best teams in the world," Alonso told the club's official website.

"It’s been a very good two seasons and I am looking forward to more."

The 27-year-old was a key part of the Blues' Premier League title win in 2016-17, while he also played a key role as they claimed FA Cup glory last season.

He has since gone on to win three caps for Spain, having made his bow in March of 2018.

Club director Marina Granovskaia added: "We are delighted to be extending Marcos’ contract. In the past two seasons he has developed into an important player for the club, demonstrating his outstanding ability and a fantastic attitude that has helped him become a Premier League champion and Spain international."

Alonso confirmed that he would be signing a new contract earlier this month, having been linked with a return to Spain.

He stated that he was unsure how long the contract would run for, but he has now committed to another five years in west London.

"My father takes care of that as he is the one who leads the negotiations," he said. "I am 27 years old, I still have two more years and I am going to extend my contract.

"What concerns me is to play as well as possible to win matches and titles with Chelsea and with the national team. I'm calm with my contract."

Chelsea fans will undoubtedly be hoping the club can follow the news of a new deal for Alonso by convincing Eden Hazard to commit to new terms.

The Belgian's future remains unclear, however, with him consistently having been linked with Real Madrid and having shown an eagerness to one day make the move to the Bernabeu.
