The former San Jose man has signed a contract with his old team’s rivals after Los Angeles landed his rights in a December deal

The LA Galaxy have signed former San Jose Earthquakes goalkeeper David Bingham, the MLS side announced Wednesday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“David is a reliable option for us in goal and we’re excited to add him to the roster,” Galaxy head coach Sigi Schmid said in a club statement. “He brings a wealth of MLS experience and we believe he is a player that will be part of our success in 2018."

Bingham had been out of contract following the 2017 MLS season. As he was not eligible for MLS free agency, the Galaxy had to acquire his rights from their in-state rivals and did so in December for $100,000 in general allocation money and $100,000 in targeted allocation money.

The 28-year-old California native originally landed in San Jose via a weighted lottery after signing with the league following the 2011 MLS SuperDraft. He did not play much for the Earthquakes in his first few seasons there and moved Norwegian side Strommen for a nine-game spell in 2014.

However, after his return to MLS, Bingham emerged as one of the league’s top keepers, and started 34 games each of the next two seasons. He was an MLS All-Star in 2016.

Bingham also earned three caps for the United States, with his last call-up coming this past March.

However, Bingham only started 23 games in 2017 for the Quakes, as he lost his starting role midseason to second-year man Andrew Tarbell. Tarbell started the last 11 games of the MLS season and San Jose’s playoff loss to Vancouver.

Bingham’s signature is the latest move for the Galaxy as they attempt to rebound after missing the 2017 MLS postseason. Tuesday the team announced the capture of former D.C. United and Hearts midfielder Perry Kitchen. It also brought in defenders Rolf Feltscher and Jorgen Skjelvik, while also re-signing Ashley Cole.
