Champions League Betting: Red Star Belgrade stun Liverpool and defy 80/1 odds

Liverpool collapsed to one of the the biggest upset of this season's Champions League campaign so far on Tuesday night as a 2-0 loss at Red Star Belgrade left Group C in the balance.

A brace from Milan Pavkov gave the Serbian side their first victory in the tournament proper since March 1992 and defied bet365’s 14/1 (15.0) closing odds of a Red Star win in the process.

Despite being the home team, Red Star were as long as 17/1 (18.0) on Monday morning before shortening to 16/1 (17.0) half an hour before kick-off and then 14/1 (15.0) just minutes before.

bet365 also offered a massive 80/1 (81.0) on Red Star to win 2-0, with even a small stake proving to be a big winner for brave bettors, whilst taking the hosts to be leading at both half-time and full-time paid out at 20/1 (21.0).

Even in the Draw No Bet market, which sees punters have their stake returned if the match ends all square, Red Star were 12/1 (13.0) at kick-off and 7/2 (4.50) in the 1X Double Chance.

Despite the result, Liverpool are still in a reasonable position to qualify from Group C and are 1/2 (1.50) to make it into the knockout stages whilst both Napoli and Paris Saint-Germain are 4/9 (1.44).

The Reds can be backed at 2/1 (3.0) with bet365 to win the group but will almost certainly need to beat PSG in France next week – which they are currently 13/5 (3.60) to do – to stand any chance of achieving that.

After such a disjointed performance, after which Jurgen Klopp told reporters that the team “lost their mojo,” the 13/8 (2.63) on Liverpool not to qualify from Group C may also prove to be a popular bet.

The 12/1 (13.0) price, lengthened from 9/1 (10.0), on Klopp’s men to win the tournament is unlikely to see much love as Liverpool, much like the famous victory over Olympiakos in the 2004/05 season, may require victory by two clear goals on the final matchday.
