  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The Portuguese superstar lost control in the closing minutes of the match when he threw an elbow at Ali Al-Bulaihi. The referee immediately showed Ronaldo a red card for his violent conduct, which reduced Al-Nassr to 10 men before they succumbed to a 2-1 defeat to their familiar league rivals.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

As he walked off the pitch, Ronaldo sarcastically clapped for the referee, displaying his frustration with the decision. Al-Hilal capitalised on the moment, sharing a video on social media that included footage of Ronaldo's red card offence as well as an incident in a previous game between the two clubs, where he grabbed the neck of an Al-Hilal player, almost akin to WWE superstar Randy Orton's finishing move the RKO. Ronaldo escaped punishment on that occasion.

    WHAT NEXT?

However, Al-Nassr manager Luis Castro vehemently defended Ronaldo, alleging that the Al-Hilal player involved had exaggerated the incident to get his star man sent off. Nonetheless, according to reports, Ronaldo would face a two-match suspension along with a fine of 20,000 riyals for his actions if further action is taken after the referee's report filing. This means he could potentially miss the two Saudi Pro League matches against Al Feiha and Al-Khaleej. Ronaldo could return for the semi-finals of the King Cup of Champions on May 1, offering another opportunity for Al-Nassr to vie for major silverware in 2024.
