  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Vinicius Jr. might have missed a penalty on Wednesday night, but that did not stop him from being active on social media following Real Madrid's penalty shootout win over Atletico Madrid in the second leg of their Champions League round of 16 clash. The Brazilian brutally trolled Atleti and their fans on X (formerly Twitter).

  • WHAT VINICIUS JR. SAID

After the game, Vini responded to a picture of an Atleti banner on X that read "This year, yes" by replying "This year, no", signifying the intense rivalry shared between the two Madrid heavyweights and what it meant to the forward.

He also shared a few more posts on X. "How do you feel?", read one of his tweets, which he posted along with a photo of him pointing towards the Champions League badge on the Real Madrid sleeve.

"Oh my god!!! THERE'S ONLY ONE MADRID!!!! But we all know that. Let's improve next time!!!", another tweet from Vini read.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

After an entertaining 2-1 win in the first leg at the Santiago Bernabeu last week, many expected the second leg at the Metropolitano to go right down the wire. And that is exactly what happened.

Conor Gallagher shellshocked the Madrid players by opening the scoring on the night just 30 seconds after kick-off, thus levelling the tie on aggregate. However, the two sides failed to find the back of the net again with Vinicius spurning a precious chance to gain the lead on aggregate from the spot after Kylian Mbappe was brought down in the box in the second half. The game went into extra-time, followed by penalties.

Los Blancos continued their European domination of Diego Simeone's men as they won 4-2 on spot-kicks, but not before Julian Alvarez's penalty was ruled out for a double touch, leading to a lot of controversy.

    WHAT NEXT FOR VINICIUS JR.?

After two below-par performances in the Champions League last-16, Vinicius will be determined to regain form when Real Madrid visit Villarreal for a La Liga encounter on Saturday. Los Blancos are currently second in La Liga, but level on points with leaders Barcelona.
