    WHAT HAPPENED?

Ukraine went a goal down to an Albert Gudmundsson effort on the half-hour mark and were 45 minutes away from play-off elimination. But an equaliser from Viktor Tsygankov nine minutes after the break set up a tense finale, with Mudryk emerging as his nation's hero. The Chelsea starlet met Georgiy Sudakov's cross at the edge of the box to roll a delightful finish into the far corner and send Ukraine through to this summer's tournament in Germany.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The goal marked an incredible moment for Ukraine but also for Mudryk, who has largely struggled in west London following his £89 million ($109m) move from his native Shakhtar Donetsk. The 23-year-old was the cause of much frustration among the Stamford Bridge faithful at the beginning of the campaign but recent performances suggest he may have turned a corner. Mudryk scored in a 3-2 win over Newcastle and impressed against Leicester in the FA Cup, with this goal adding to an impressive March thus far.

  • WHAT NEXT FOR MUDRYK?

Chelsea fans and Mauricio Pochettino alike will be hoping the Ukrainian can bring this form on the international stage into club level and start to build up a consistent run of performances for the Blues. To do that, of course, he needs a proper run in the starting XI, which still looks in doubt despite the many abject displays of Raheem Sterling this term.
