  • WHAT HAPPENED?

In the 72nd minute, Alexander-Arnold and five other Liverpool players streamed forward in an attack with just Declan Rice in front of them in a move reminiscent of the Red Arrows shooting across the sky. Mohamed Salah lay the ball across to the right-back who rifled a shot past David Raya and onto the Arsenal crossbar. In what proved to be the game's golden chance, the right-back had failed to score the winner which would have taken Liverpool above the Gunners. With both sides putting in strong defensive performances, the game finished 1-1.

    WHAT ALEXANDER-ARNOLD SAID

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, a frustreated Alexander-Arnold said: "Yeah I think it bobbled as I went to hit it. I think it's one of those where I need to score. It's a position that I probably don't find myself in too often but when you're through on goal like that you need to find the back of the net. It was close and as a team we created our chances and on a different day, with a decision or two that goes our way, [it would be a different result]."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

The miss could prove crucial in the race for the Premier League title with Liverpool unable to gain a three-point swing had the ball found the back of the net. Had Liverpool won, they would be top of the league and two points clear of Arsenal. Yet, they remain one point behind the Gunners. In a league of such fine margins, it is understandable the right-back is frustrated.

    WHAT NEXT FOR ALEXANDER-ARNOLD?

Liverpool will have the chance to go top of the league, at least temporarily, if they beat Burnley at Turf Moor on Boxing Day. Meanwhile, Arsenal host West Ham two days later and will hope to respond to whatever Liverpool produce.
