'This isn’t the biggest challenge of my life' - Domenec Torrent gives candid assessment as he's presented as Monterrey's new coach

Monterrey officially unveiled Spanish manager Domenec Torrent as their new head coach Monday. Torrent, who already has experience in Liga MX after two seasons with Atlético San Luis, was introduced at a news conference where he outlined his vision for the team - and made headlines with a candid response.

When asked if leading Rayados represents the most significant challenge of his coaching career, Torrent responded with refreshing honesty.

“Flamengo is a massive club. Barcelona, Manchester City… we’ve been around the world,” said the former assistant to Pep Guardiola. “Of course, this is a very important, exciting, and demanding challenge - that’s why we’re here. But no, I’m sorry, it’s not the biggest challenge of my life.”

Torrent clarified that his words weren’t meant to diminish Monterrey, but rather to acknowledge the depth of experience he’s accumulated across top-tier leagues in Spain, Germany, England, and Brazil. Still, he emphasized that his focus is entirely on succeeding with La Pandilla.

“Right now, it is the most exciting challenge of our lives, because we’re here and we need to win," he said.

The Spanish tactician arrives on a one-year contract, a decision that surprised some. However, Torrent explained he’s comfortable with short-term deals, and that staying longer will depend on results.

“I’d love to be here for five years, because that would mean we’ve won things, that the board is happy, we’re happy, and the fans are happy" he said. "We’re not here just to stay one year. We’re here to earn more time.”

Torrent’s résumé in Mexico includes 40 matches in charge of Atlético San Luis, where he recorded 17 wins, four draws, and 19 losses. His most notable achievement came in the Apertura 2024, when he led the club to a surprise semifinal run.

As Monterrey look to reclaim their place among the elite in Liga MX, Torrent’s arrival brings with it a blend of international pedigree and no-nonsense ambition. Whether that translates into silverware remains to be seen - but the message is clear: he’s here to win.

"We have a very talented, professional, and committed squad. We’re confident that with those players, plus Torrent’s abilities and the staff around him, we’re headed in the right direction," said Antonio Noriega, Monterrey’s sporting director.

Torrent began working with the squad on Monday as Monterrey ramps up preparations for next month's Club World Cup. The team will make its tournament debut on June 17 against Inter Milan, followed by a clash with River Plate on June 21.

Rayados will close out the group stage on June 25 against Japan’s Urawa Red Diamonds.
