  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Nigeria made it to their first Africa Cup of Nations final in 11 years in dramatic fashion. A William Troost-Ekong penalty was cancelled out in the last minute by Teboho Kokoena's spot-kick, with the help of some VAR drama. The Super Eagles eventually prevailed in a shoot-out, with Kelechi Iheanacho scoring the winning penalty, a strike Saka uploaded to his Instagram story.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Saka was undecided on his international allegiance in his breakthrough season with Arsenal, saying the decision would be "tough" back in July 2020. But he got his first call-up under Gareth Southgate in October of that year and was handed a surprise starring role in England's Euro 2020 run. Since then the 23-year-old has made the Three Lions spot his own, racking up 11 goals in 32 senior appearances and becoming one of the first names on Southgate's teamsheet, if fit.

    WHAT NEXT FOR SAKA?

While an international team close to his heart gets closer to a first trophy since 2013, Saka's contributions helped Arsenal stake their claim as Premier League title challengers this term. He scored in the Gunners' 3-1 victory over Liverpool on Sunday as those two sides look to rival the dominant force that is Manchester City.
