Sergio Aguero insists Man City won titles 'fair and square' despite 115 Premier League charges as club face trial for allegedly breaking FFP rules during era of dominance

City are facing a number of charges for breaching Financial Fair Play rules and misreporting figures to the authorities. The alleged breaches are reported to have occurred through the course of 14 seasons, starting in 2009–2010. In that span, the current Premier League champions have won the trophy seven times, in addition to three FA Cups, six League Cups, and a Champions League title.

Speaking to Stake.com, when asked about the pending trial, Aguero said: "I'd say this is a topic beyond my scope. I can say that our achievements as a team, on the field, were won with effort and sportsmanship, fair and square."

In addition to 14 claims of not providing correct financial reports of player and manager remuneration for the same period, City are facing 54 allegations of not providing accurate and up-to-date financial information from 2009–10. In 2011, Aguero made a £35m transfer to the Etihad Stadium. In his 390 appearances, the former Argentina international scored 260 goals. Following his completion of a transfer to Barcelona, the 35-year-old was diagnosed with a cardiac issue, which led to his retirement in December of 2021.

Premier League chief Richard Masters confirmed that a date is in place for City's hearing for the alleged breaches. Should the club be judged to have violated or bent the rules, they may be subject to a variety of penalties, including the potential of an enforced relegation.
