MLS Power Rankings: Seattle Sounders' attack explodes, Gregg Berhalter earns first Chicago Fire win while Minnesota United and Philadelphia Union impress as LA Galaxy tumble

The LA Galaxy have officially set an unwanted record as the worst reigning MLS Cup champions through the first three weeks of the following season, suffering their third straight loss in a 3-0 drubbing by St. Louis CITY SC.

The team's winless start after three matches sets an unwanted record as no previous MLS defending champion has started the season with three-straight losses. According to Elias Sports Bureau, the longest all-time winless streak by a reigning champion was also held by the Galaxy, going eight straight without a win in 2003. However, that team got off to a better start than the current team, drawing its first three matches.

However, MLS Matchday 3 was full of milestones -- most of them worth celebrating.

U.S. international Jordan Morris led the Seattle Sounders to a dominant win over previously unbeaten LAFC, scoring a stunning goal to become the club’s all-time leading scorer. Just north, the Vancouver Whitecaps defeated Canadian rivals CF Montreal, making it three wins in three to start the season. Elsewhere in the Western Conference, Minnesota United ended San Jose’s unbeaten run, while expansion side San Diego FC roared back from a two-goal deficit to stun Real Salt Lake in Utah.

The Eastern Conference brought its own fireworks.

The Philadelphia Union joined Vancouver as the only team to start the season with three straight wins, while Tai Baribo netted his sixth goal of the campaign to take an early lead in the Golden Boot race. The Columbus Crew settled for a goalless draw against Houston Dynamo, and FC Cincinnati cruised past Toronto FC. Then, the Chicago Fire stunned FC Dallas late, scoring three times in quick succession to seal Gregg Berhalter’s first win as manager.

Inter Miami, still without Lionel Messi for a third consecutive match due to fitness concerns, edged past Charlotte FC -- but also picked up their third red card of the season.

It wasn’t all glory, though.

Phil Neville’s Portland Timbers collapsed against Nashville SC, Austin FC’s high-spending offseason has yet to yield results, and Sporting Kansas City remain winless in five matches across all competitions.

So, which club is leading the pack, and who is falling short of expectations? GOAL presents the latest 2025 MLS Power Rankings.

Note: previous date was March 3.

  • 30CF Montreal ⬇️

MTL are 0-3 with a negative-four goal-differential. It's been really poor -- and a roster overhaul might not be enough at this point.

  • 29Sporting Kansas City ⬇️

Winless in five matches across all competitions to start the 2025 season. A 2-1 loss to a bottom-half side in D.C. on Saturday summed up how their season has gone so far.

Longtime manager Peter Vermes has the biggest task of his career ahead of him, and if he cannot turn things around, it might be time to look elsewhere for a leader on the touchline.

  • Caleb Porter MLSUSA Today Images

    28New England Revolution ⬇️

Another week, and another goalless showing from the Revs. That's three straight matches without a goal - and it's not going to get easier. Striker Leo Campana exited their match on Saturday with a lower-leg injury, which could prove to be a huge roadblock to overcome if it sidelines him for a period of time.

Caleb Porter has been handed the longest leash in MLS, but time is slowly running out.

Woeful defending, woeful attacking and more alarmingly for the club, woeful attendance showings. It is trying times in the Northeast for one of MLS' most storied clubs.

  • Portland Timbers v Austin FCGetty Images Sport

    27Austin FC ⬇️

They spent all that money on Brandon Vazquez and Myrto Uzuni, yet neither have a goal-contribution through three games this season. The alarm bell is starting to be looked at.

  • Houston Dynamo FC v Inter MiamiGetty Images Sport

    26Houston Dynamo ⬆️

    Oh, Houston.

Winless through three, they at least earned their first point of the season in a 0-0 draw with the Columbus Crew on Saturday. As it stands, though, they're just an uninspiring team to watch at the moment.

  • Portland Timbers v Austin FCGetty Images Sport

    25Portland Timbers ⬇️

    Portland is so puzzling.

Goalkeeper James Pantemis saved not one, but TWO penalty kicks inside the opening 18 minutes of Saturday's match after their catastrophic defense let them down once again. You'd think that would spearhead momentum and excitement. Nope. Nashville SC handily beat them 2-0 at Geodis Park.

Manager Phil Neville will be in hot water if things don't change soon.

  • 24Toronto FC ⬇️

Blanked by Cincy 2-0, TFC were never in the match. They couldn't get anything going in the final third, and struggled to retain possession in transition throughout the game. Once they figure out how to offload Lorenzo Insigne, things might be able to improve through roster building, but for now, it's going to be a rough start to 2025 for the foreseeable future.

  • 23Nashville SC ⬆️

Huge, huge win for Nashville. Defeating Portland 2-0 is the win they needed after two uninspiring performances to start the campaign.

However, they had two penalty kick attempts saved inside the opening 18 minutes. That's not good enough, and B.J. Callaghan knows it.

  • 22Los Angeles Galaxy ⬇️

Bottom of the West and their title defense is off to the worst possible start. They'll bounce back, but this is not how anyone would have envisioned their season starting.

  • 21Real Salt Lake ⬇️

Questions are really going to be asked soon of roster assembly and ambition by ownership with RSL. They have yet to replace former star striker Chicho Arango, and their defense has increasingly become an issue through three matches played.

After going up 1-0 on San Diego at home, they conceded three unanswered in the closing stages of the match. It was a disastrous defensive showing.

Manager Pablo Mastroeni has his hands full.

  • 20St. Louis CITY SC ⬆️

Three straight games without conceding a goal, CITY handed the LA Galaxy their third loss of the season in a 3-0 walloping. It was also CITY's first goals of the season after two 0-0 draws to begin the campaign.

It's hard to see where they sit among the teams in the West, but they're unbeaten and their defense has been sound.

  • 19FC Dallas ⬇️

FC Dallas' first real poor showing of the season, they conceded three goals to the Fire in the final eight minutes of the match to fall 3-1 at home in front of their fans. It was a catastrophic defensive showing by all accounts.

However, with an attack of Petar Musa and Lucho Acosta, banking on one-goal victories feels silly.

  • 18Chicago Fire ⬆️

Huge result for the Fire, earning their first three points under Gregg Berhalter in a massive 3-1 win over FC Dallas. Hugo Cuypers might not be scoring as much as they need him to but he has three assists in three games so far - that is crucial.

Meanwhile, Brian Gutierrez looks reinvented. The U.S. have to be looking at these showings ahead of two tournaments in the coming months.

  • 17D.C. United ⬆️

Another big result for D.C. in Week 3, defeating Sporting KC 2-1. Although the roster has its flaws, victories over struggling opponents this early in the season will be crucial come the end of the campaign.

  • Austin FC v Colorado RapidsGetty Images Sport

    16Colorado Rapids ⬆️

The Rapids narrowly beat a struggling Austin side 1-0, which isn't a great result but at the same time - it's three points. Manage Chris Armas absolutely takes that result after their poor Week 2 showing against FC Dallas.

It will take a few weeks to really get an idea of where this team sits in terms of the West's elite, but the pieces are there.

  • New York City FC v Orlando City SCGetty Images Sport

    15Orlando City ⬇️

A tough road performance, Orlando fell to NYCFC 2-1 at Yankee Stadium. That's two losses in three against Eastern Conference playoff contenders, which is not a great start to the season for manager Oscar Pareja.

U.S. international Duncan McGuire was unavailable against the Pigeons but it feels like that's a poor excuse to not leave with at least a point.

  • 14New York City FC ⬆️

Won their home-opener against Orlando City 2-1 with goals from Hannes Wolf and Alonso Martinez for their first three points of the season. The club has a hefty amount of GAM to play with for the rest of the season, and an open DP slot still, so expectations are they only build on what their roster looks like at the moment.

If they play their cards right, they could contend for a home playoff spot in the East.

  • 13New York Red Bulls ⬇️

Drew Atlanta 0-0, but were on the front foot for much of the match. Excitingly, 16-year-old Julian Hall was handed his first start of 2025 and across the first 45 minutes, he was lively. At times he was a bit excited on the ball, but overall, was composed. If he can break out in 2025, they'll be a fun team to watch from the perspective of pure excitement.

  • Charlotte FC v Atlanta UnitedGetty Images Sport

    12Atlanta United ⬇️

Atlanta is winless in their past two matches after a 0-0 draw with RBNY, and they haven't scored a goal since opening week. There's no cause for real concern yet, but with a star core of Miguel Almiron, Alexey Miranchuk, and Emmanuel Latte Lath - expectations are high.

  • 11San Jose Earthquakes ⬇️

The Quakes were blanked 1-0 by MNUFC at home, despite owning a stunning 66.8 percent possession of the ball. They couldn't break down the Loons defense, and frankly, had no solutions in the final-third either.

Likely an eye-opener for Bruce Arena, it was a good early-season lesson for the squad.

  • Inter Miami CF v Charlotte FCGetty Images Sport

    10Charlotte FC ⬇️

Tough one for Charlotte. They were up a man for the entirety of the second half and some change, and couldn't find the back of the net against a Messi-less Inter Miami. Neither Wilfried Zaha or Patrick Agyemang had answers in the attack, which will be puzzling for Dean Smith to comprehend over the next few days.

Still, not much to read into...yet.

  • 9Minnesota United ⬆️

Eric Ramsay's 5-3-2 formation is one fans don't often see in the professional game, but it has worked well so far -- especially in Week 3. The Loons outplayed Bruce Arena's Earthquakes all evening and were so defensively composed that neither Chicho Arango nor Josef Martinez could break them down. Whether in possession, on the counter, or just in transition, San Jose had no answers - it was an impressive showing.

Meanwhile, Kelvin Yeboah bagged the winner for the second-straight week for MNUFC, as the DP forward continues to excel in the attack for the club.

  • 8Los Angeles FC ⬇️

Handily beaten by Seattle, LAFC were never in the game. This was arguably their worst performance in quite some time, despite the rotation from manager Steve Cherundolo.

Meanwhile, Olivier Giroud has yet to score an MLS regular season goal since arriving last summer. It might be time to start worrying about his performances in the final third.

  • 7Inter Miami ⬇️

Miami can continue to win with their star-studded roster, but their lack of discipline as a whole is really damming. They defeated Charlotte FC 1-0 on Sunday, with Tadeo Allende once again scoring, but they received their third red card of the season during the match. Goalkeeper Oscar Ustari was sent off for a denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity offense, and they played 50 plus minutes with 10-men. A title-winning team cannot afford to be this casual.

Meanwhile, Messi did not play for the third-straight game but was named to the bench for the match.

Note: Inter Miami's second red card of the season, handed to Ian Fray on Matchday 2, was rescinded four days later prior to the start of Matchday 3.

  • 6San Diego FC ⬆️

No Chucky Lozano, no problem. The Mexican star missed out due to injury, but the San Diego attack was still on fire without him.

SDFC are unbeaten through three matches, sitting on seven points after a huge 3-1 come-from-behind victory over Real Salt Lake. They started flat, but after conceding, they found their flow and once again it was Anders Dreyer who impressed. The Danish winger scored the go-ahead winner before the dagger arrived with seconds to spare in stoppage time off the boot of Marcus Ingvartsen.

  • FC Cincinnati v Toronto FCGetty Images Sport

    5FC Cincinnati ⬆️

A nice bounce back for a Cincy side which was handily beaten by Philadelphia on Matchday 2. Goals from Kevin Denkey and Yuya Kubo gave them all three points and a clean sheet in a 2-0 win over TFC.

  • 4Seattle Sounders ⬆️

Seattle put five goals past LAFC in a stunning result in the West, with its star-studded attack finally unleashing on-target. Morris, meanwhile, finally scored the goal that put him atop the scoring charts for the Cascadia club at 87. Things are looking to be clicking for Brian Schmetzer.

On a worrying note - Argentine winger Pedro De La Vega was substituted off the pitch 36 minutes into the match with a lower-body injury. The positive news is he walked off, but knowing he missed the majority of the 2024 season with a knee injury, it was a scary sight for Seattle fans.

  • 3Vancouver Whitecaps ⬆️

The Whitecaps are 3-0 and atop the Western Conference and are coming off a 2-0 win over Canadian rivals CF Montreal -- they're playing outstanding soccer under Jesper Sorensen at the moment.

Of note, though, is star attacker Ryan Gauld was substituted off the pitch with a non-contact injury midway through the first half. There hasn't been an update on his status yet, but non-contact injuries on turf are never a good sign.

  • 2Philadelphia Union ⬆️

Tai Baribo is a man on fire, with six goals in three games. The Union, meanwhile, are atop the Supporters' Shield standings three weeks into the season. They've been brilliant under new manager Bradley Carnell. After a 2-0 win over the Revolution, they're now really starting to turn heads.

  • Columbus Crew 2025IMGAN

    1Columbus Crew ↔️

The Crew were blanked 0-0 by the Dynamo at home, which is not a great result by all accounts, but it was their second-straight clean sheet and they sit on seven points through three games without a loss. Wilfried Nancy's side has yet to take a step back in 2025 despite the roster changes in their attack and defense.
