Man Utd told 'PGMOL failed' to rule out Arsenal's goal at Old Trafford during Premier League opener despite introduction of new rule for 2025-26 season

Riccardo Calafiori scored the only goal of the game as Arsenal beat United 1-0 on Sunday. Ex-official Clattenburg pointed out that the Premier League is trying to clamp down on grappling during set pieces, and yet William Saliba's muscular tussling with Mason Mount and goalkeeper Altay Bayindir went unpunished.

He told United in Focus: "In real time, I did not see any problem with Arsenal's goal. But when you watch it in slow motion, you can see Mason Mount was having his shirt pulled and Bayindir was being impeded while challenging for the ball. PGMOL said they would punish this type of challenge more, but again they failed."

Days before the new Premier League season, PGMOL chief Howard Webb said that referees would be stricter when it came to holding players in the penalty area. Therefore, Mikel Arteta's Arsenal may have gotten away with one at Old Trafford.

Amorim's United will hope to bounce back from this opening game defeat when they travel to Fulham on Sunday, whereas Arteta's Arsenal host newly promoted Leeds United at the Emirates the day prior.
