Benzema was on target as Al Ittihad edged out Al Ettifaq by a slender 3-2 margin on Sunday. THE BIGGER PICTURE

While Al Ittihad edge closer to silverware, the race for the league’s top scorer remains wide open. Ronaldo currently leads the charge with 23 goals for Al Nassr. Trailing him are Ivan Toney of Al Ahli and Abderrazak Hamdallah of Al Shabab, both sitting on 19. Benzema is not far behind, holding fourth place with 18 goals to his name.

  • WHAT BENZEMA SAID

However, in the mixed zone after the Al Ettifaq victory, Benzema made it abundantly clear that personal records are secondary. When the subject of the top scorer race arose, he simply said: "I don’t care about this my friend. The most important thing is the (SPL) trophy."

WHAT NEXT FOR BENZEMA & RONALDO?

The title and top scorer races could intersect in dramatic fashion when Benzema’s Al Ittihad face Ronaldo’s Al Nassr on May 7. The highly anticipated showdown will be a crucial test for both clubs - Al Ittihad in their quest to seal the title, and Al Nassr in their effort to stay in contention. However, before the domestic fixture, Ronaldo will be back in action much sooner as Al Nassr are set to face Japanese side Yokohama F. Marinos this Sunday in the AFC Champions League.
