Julian Alvarez becomes Barcelona's top target as president Joan Laporta picks Atletico Madrid star to be Robert Lewandowski's heir amid talk of Diego Simeone frustrations

According to Spanish outlet Sport, Alvarez has a €500 million (£436m/$587m) release clause and is under contract with Atletico until 2030. Barcelona expect Atletico to use that clause as leverage and are unlikely to negotiate for less than €200m (£174m/$234m).

However, Barcelona believe personal terms will not be an issue, as Alvarez is a lifelong fan of the club, inspired by his Argentina teammate Lionel Messi. The forward has been identified as the successor to Polish striker Robert Lewandowski, whose potential departure could ease Barcelona’s financial situation and allow them to pursue Alvarez without breaking La Liga's spending rules.

While Alvarez remains the top target, another option under consideration is Manchester City’s Erling Haaland.
