Many other footballers from the years gone by switched clubs between Manchester United and Liverpool.
Ted Savage, who joined Liverpool in 1931 and left to join United midway through the 1937-38 season, was one of the first players to switch clubs.
John Sheldon was another player from the early 1900s who made the move to Liverpool from Manchester United in 1910. Sheldon made 26 appearances for the Red Devils between 1910 and 1913 before joining the Reds from Merseyside, making 147 appearances for them.
English striker Phil Chisnall started his career at United in 1959 under Sir Matt Busby, a year after the Munich air tragedy. He moved to Liverpool in 1964 and was noted for being the last player to have been transferred directly between Manchester United and the Merseyside giants. A unique legacy that Chisnall left behind was that he played under three iconic managers, Matt Busby at Manchester United, Bill Shankly at Liverpool and Alf Ramsey in the England under-23 team.
Allenby Chilton joined Liverpool as a youngster in 1938, but never played a game for the club as he moved to Manchester United later that year. He established himself as Sir Matt Busby's first choice centre-back and was also made club captain in the 1953-54 season.
Last on this iconic list is Peter Beardsley. The striker joined United for just one season in 1982-83, making no appearances for them, before moving to Vancouver Whitecaps in 1983 and later moving to Newcastle United in the same year.
In 1997, he joined Liverpool and went on to feature 131 times for them, scoring 46 goals.
