'I don't feel the touch!' - Julian Alvarez calls for UEFA rule change after controversial disallowed penalty in Atletico's shootout loss to Real Madrid that he's 'watched 1,000 times'

Real Madrid's Champions League luck worked in their favour yet again as they won their round of 16 tie against Atletico Madrid on penalties in highly controversial circumstances. Alvarez took the Rojiblancos' second spot kick and scored past Thibaut Courtois, however, his penalty was then chalked off by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) for a double touch.

The decision to chalk off Alvarez's penalty was met with a lot of criticism from Atletico Madrid and a number of pundits as they believed VAR did not have clear evidence of the Argentine having touched the ball twice. Alvarez has now doubled down that he did not "feel the touch" and has claimed that he has watched the video a thousand times but seen no conclusive evidence.

Speaking to ESPN via Sport, Alvarez said: “I have watched it a thousand times, there are videos everywhere. The truth is that I don’t feel the touch, because if there were two touches, the contact is minimal and it is very difficult to perceive it.

“I think the rule has to be a little clearer because I don’t try to take any advantage and if the goalkeeper is off his line when he makes a save, the penalty is repeated. This is not to take any advantage. It’s a shame what happened.”

Atletico are now looking to book another showdown against Real Madrid, this time in the Copa del Rey final, as they aim to beat Barcelona in the second leg of their semi-final tie. The three sides are also involved in a dramatic title race in La Liga that looks set to go down to the wire.
