‘Disappointed if he went to MLS’ - USMNT star Josh Sargent told to find Premier League transfer ‘stepping stone’ as 14-goal striker has ‘outgrown’ Norwich

The 25-year-old striker is expected to have plenty of options to consider this summer. He has registered 14 goals for the Canaries this season, but has been unable to fire them back into promotion contention.

He could still end up back in the top tier of English football, as interest continues to build ahead of the next window, while a return to his homeland - having never graced MLS - has also been speculated on.

Legendary former Norwich frontman Chris Sutton believes Sargent is good enough to be plying his trade at the very highest level in Europe. He expects a deal to be done over the coming months as Carrow Road reluctantly bids farewell to another fan favourite.

Sutton has told the Pink Un: “Increasingly, it feels less like if Sargent goes—but when, where, and for how much? He has three years left on his contract, and Norwich will be in a strong position to receive a sizeable fee for his services.

“He's in his mid-twenties, coming to the peak of his career and has really improved as a player. He has improved the team. You can't begrudge a player wanting to play at the highest possible level.

“He has now outgrown the club as a player, and everybody can see that. It's time for everyone involved—club, fans, and player—to shake hands and for him to leave amicably. Sargent has all the attributes to show that he can be a really accomplished Premier League striker or in any top league across Europe. Now is the time for him to strike.”

Premier League title winner Sutton added: “I'd be a bit disappointed if he went back to the MLS. He's talked about challenging himself. That's not to disrespect the MLS, but it's not the Premier League, La Liga, or even the Bundesliga.

“It would be an understandable step for his family, and you have to put that first, but I'd like to see him given a go in the Premier League. I wouldn't rule out any club from outside the supposed 'big six'. Josh could cut the mustard at any of them.

“He needs to go to that club and the Premier League where it can be possibly a stepping stone for him to then go on to greater things. Sargent also has an upcoming home World Cup on the horizon. I highly doubt that Mauricio Pochettino or the USA will want him pottering about in the Championship again.”

Sargent is tied to a contract through to the summer of 2028, meaning that Norwich can demand a big fee for him. Their resolve is expected to be tested by several sides that find themselves in the market for a proven goalscorer.
