Having failed to advance in the Libertadores, Universidad de Chile will now take on Argentina's Independiente in the first leg of the Copa Sudamericana round of 16 at Estadio Nacional Julio Martínez Pradanos on Wednesday.

La U defeated Paraguayan outfit Guarani 6-2 on aggregate in the knockout round play-offs. Meanwhile, Independiente secured the top spot in Group A of the Sudamericana.  

The winner of this game over two legs will face either Alianza Lima or Universidad Catolica in the quarter-finals.

Universidad de Chile team news

Argentine forward Leandro Fernandez is sidelined with an ankle injury, expected to be out for a few weeks. 

Captain Marcelo Diaz will be in manager Gustavo Alvarez's tactical plan, alongside Charles Aranguiz and Israel Poblete in the middle.

Nicolas Ramirez appears to be available for selection after recovering from a shoulder issue.

Independiente team news

Defender Sebastian Valdez is unavailable due to a tendon injury sustained in early August.

Given the overwhelming fixture schedule, manager Julio Vaccari will continue to go for rotations.

Matias Abaldo, Ignacio Pussetto and Matias Abaldo are in contention to lead the line, while Santiago Hidalgo has joined French side Toulouse this summer.
