Why Man Utd have decided not to sign Marcel Sabitzer & Wout Weghorst permanently this summer

  • United won't sign Sabitzer & Weghorst
  • Sabitzer & Weghorst failed to impress
  • United to focus on other targets

WHAT HAPPENED? According to Daily Mail, Manchester United have decided against making the loans of midfielder Sabitzer and striker Weghorst permanent, with the two players returning to Bayern Munich and Burnley at the end of the season respectively.

Neither Weghorst nor Sabitzer found their footing at United since moving to Old Trafford in January 2023. The Dutch forward has failed to find the net in 17 league appearances and scored only two goals across all competitions. On the other hand, the Austrian midfielder started well, but his performances dwindled as the second half of the season went by.

THE BIGGER PICTURE: The report states that although United manager Erik ten Hag likes both Sabitzer and Weghorst, he along with the club has decided to move on from them to focus on signing other targets.

Manchester United are prioritising the signing of a new striker next summer, with links with both Napoli ace Victor Osimhen and Tottenham Hotspur all-time top scorer Harry Kane. Additionally, they are also looking to sign Osimhen's teammate Kim Min-jae to reinforce their defence.

WHAT NEXT FOR SABITZER AND WEGHORST? Sabitzer will miss out on United's FA Cup final against rivals Manchester City on June 3 due to a season-ending meniscus injury, while Weghorst could still feature depending on Ten Hag's decisions.
