In the 2023-24 campaign, the Gunners have been awarded five spot-kicks in English top-flight competition. They have all been converted, with Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard and Kai Havertz all displaying nerves of steel.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Saka has been a go-to option for some time, with the usually reliable Jorginho yet to step up to the spot for Arsenal since completing his move from Chelsea. Gabriel Jesus is another proven goalscorer that has converted from 12 yards in the past, while fellow Brazilian Gabriel Martinelli scored against Everton back in May 2022.

  • WHAT THEY SAID

Quizzed on whether there is a hierarchy of penalty takers at Emirates Stadium, with responsibility being passed around, Arteta told reporters: “There is one and they have surprised me already this season. I don’t really know who is going to take it, sometimes when I see [there’s a penalty] and someone has the ball I’m still doubting. They have the freedom to do it, they practice a lot and it’s what they decide on the day is the best thing to do.”

    WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

Arsenal will be hoping that the goals flow for them on Saturday – from the penalty spot or open play – as they are preparing to lock horns with London rivals Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
