Man Utd to include key clause in Mason Greenwood's contract as outcast edges closer to Marseille transfer

United are clearly keen to maximise Greenwood's financial value, with Fabrizio Romano reporting that the club want to include a sizeable sell-on clause in any permanent transfer. As such, they could pocket 40% or even 50% of the fee if the forward is to move on in the future.

Despite reported interest in Greenwood from various clubs across Europe, including Juventus, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Napoli, Lazio and others, United have struggled to command their £40 million ($51m) asking price for a player who only scored eight league goals in a mid-table team in 2023-24. Even with cutting ties now, a sell-on clause would mean they effectively still keep a stake in Greenwood and stand to profit in the future if his performances further down the line push his value up.

Romano reported on X: "Man United will include big sell-on clause into the deal. It could be even up to 40/50% of the future sale, clubs are in talks about that. Olympique Marseille, getting closer after official bid sent earlier today."

Leaving Manchester United permanently is the only course. The 22-year-old reported to Carrington on Monday on the first day of pre-season, but only to further discuss his impending exit and not to partake in any training with the rest of the squad. It appears to be edging closer to reality, with Roberto De Zerbi's Marseille the most likely destination at this stage.
