The Colorado State Rams open their 2025 campaign on the road as they head to Seattle to square off with the Washington Huskies at Alaska Airlines Field at Husky Stadium on Saturday, August 30. Both programs are looking to set the tone early, though each enters the season with different storylines.

Colorado State heads into 2025 with a mix of familiar faces and fresh gaps to fill after a wave of graduations and portal exits reshaped the roster. The Rams put together a strong 8-5 campaign a year ago, highlighted by a 6-1 run in conference play, but matching that win total again will be a tall order. Among last season’s highlights were victories over New Mexico and rival Wyoming, yet expectations remain tempered. The media slotted CSU ninth in the preseason poll, a sign that another climb up the standings won’t come easily.

Washington, meanwhile, begins the year in a transitional phase, though there’s a sense they could exceed expectations if the offense finds its rhythm. The Huskies stumbled to a 6-7 finish in 2024, capped by a bowl loss, and posted a 4-5 conference record along the way. Still, their schedule was unforgiving, and they proved capable of pulling off a shocker with an upset over then-No. 10 Michigan. A rebuilding tag may fit, but there’s also potential for the Huskies to surprise in 2025.

Washington vs Colorado State team news & key players

Washington Huskies team news

Washington turns the page with sophomore quarterback Demond Williams Jr., who flashed promise with 374 passing yards in last year’s bowl game and finished 2024 with 974 yards and only one interception. The ground game should remain a strength thanks to senior back Jonah Coleman, one of the Big Ten’s top rushers after piling up 1,053 yards at 5.5 per carry.

The receiving corps must replace its top target, but Denzel Washington (834 yards) and Penn State transfer Omari Evans (415 yards) give the Huskies viable options. Defensively, new coordinator Ryan Walters inherits a unit that held opponents to 325 yards per game last year, with reinforcements like corner Tacario Davis and returner Ephesians Prysock expected to boost a lagging pass rush.

Colorado State Rams team news

Colorado State counters with experienced QB Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi, who threw for nearly 2,800 yards with a 14-to-9 TD-INT line but struggled with turnovers. The Rams’ run game will lean on sophomore Justin Marshall after his 746-yard freshman season, though the receiving corps is thin following heavy transfer losses. Armani Winfield (341 yards) returns, while Ohio State transfer Kojo Antwi provides depth.

On defense, new coordinator Tyson Summers faces a rebuild after key departures at linebacker, though safety Ayden Hector returns following a 40-tackle campaign. Last year’s group gave up nearly 400 yards per game.
