The UTEP Miners (1-5) head out on the road for a Conference USA showdown against the Sam Houston Bearkats (0-6) on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, at Elliott T. Bowers Stadium.
It’s been a rough go for UTEP through six games, with just one win to show for their efforts. That lone bright spot came early in the season when they rolled past Tennessee-Martin 42–17 back on September 6 in their second outing of the year. Since then, it’s been a steady uphill climb with more setbacks than success.
Sam Houston’s season hasn’t been any kinder. The Bearkats are still searching for their first win, sitting at 0–6 after a tough opening stretch that included a 41–24 loss to Western Kentucky followed by a 38–21 defeat against UNLV. It’s been a season full of growing pains, and they’ll be desperate to flip the script in front of the home crowd.

Sam Houston vs UTEP team news & key players
Sam Houston Bearkats team news
Malachi Nelson has put up 1,163 passing yards and eight touchdowns, but his aggressive style has also resulted in a team-high nine interceptions. Kenny Odom (300 yards, 2 TDs) and Wondame Davis Jr. (193 yards, 3 TDs) have been his go-to playmakers through the air. On the ground, the duo of Ashten Emory and Hahsaun Wilson has combined for 349 rushing yards and three touchdowns, giving the offense at least some balance. Defensively, Emon Allen has been a standout in the secondary with two picks, while C.J. Brown leads the unit with 33 total tackles. Despite forcing seven turnovers, Sam Houston continues to struggle on key downs, allowing opponents to convert a concerning 55% of their third-down attempts.
UTEP Miners team news
For UTEP, quarterback Hunter Watson has totaled 754 passing yards and four touchdowns while also being a threat with his legs, racking up 208 rushing yards and two more scores. The backfield combo of Alton McCaskill (197 yards, 1 TD) and Landan Brown (132 yards, 2 TDs) contributes to an offense that averages 107.2 rushing yards per contest. Nelson’s nine interceptions give the Bearkats an opportunity to swing momentum, especially with their defense already having generated seven takeaways this season. If they can capitalize on those mistakes, flipping field position and stealing extra possessions becomes very realistic.
