The highly-rated midfielders have become key figures at Camp Nou, while also starring for the Spain national team. Pedri - who joined the reigning La Liga champions in 2020 - is still just 20 years of age, while Gavi is even younger at 19.

Barca are aware of how prized a couple of assets in Catalunya have become, with new contracts put in place that include €1 billion (£870m/$1.1bn) release clauses. They have experienced much-publicised financial difficulties and would expect to generate nine-figure sums from any sales involving Pedri or Gavi.

While they would help to balance the books by bringing in sizeable fees, their value on the pitch outweighs that off it. That means the likes of United, Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain will be left disappointed – with Ansu Fati set to be the next La Masia graduate to be offloaded on a permanent basis once he completes a season-long loan in England at Brighton.
