Vincent Kompany's dad reveals three Premier League clubs wanted Man City legend before he agreed to become new Bayern Munich manager

Bayern have raised eyebrows across Europe by opting to make Kompany the club's new manager. The 38-year-old has taken on one of the biggest jobs in football fresh from being relegated from the Premier League with Burnley. However, his father has insisted that other clubs have been interested in the former Belgium international.

He told La Derniere Heure: "It was a surprise to the whole world. Well, not for me. If you look at which teams have already come knocking: last year you had Tottenham and Chelsea, now Brighton showed interest, and Chelsea again. But when Bayern, a club that is so well structured at all levels, comes knocking, you don't refuse."

Pierre Kompany also spoke about how Burnley's relegation had not affected Bayern's decision to target his son. "At Bayern they did not focus blindly on that relegation," he added. "They know Burnley should have gotten more points. They thought it was good that Vincent does not deny his vision when he falls behind."

Kompany will now be charged with bringing the Bundesliga trophy back to the Allianz Arena after Bayer Leverkusen's shock title win last season. The former Burnley boss has already spoken about his desire to "win every game" and highlighted the fact that the Champions League final will be held in Munich next year. Bayern made it to the semi-finals last season before being knocked out by eventual winners Real Madrid. Kompany is yet to manage a club in the Champions League.

Kompany will be under pressure to deliver silverware in his first season at Bayern after the club went trophyless last time out for the first time since 2012. Bayern kick off preseason training on July 15 and will travel to South Korea as well as taking in a friendly against Harry Kane's former club Tottenham.
