  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Portugal head coach Martinez has absolutely no qualms about Vitinha being one of the prime candidates to lift this year's Ballon d'Or award after he played an instrumental role in defeating Germany in the Nations League semi-final on Wednesday. The former Everton and Belgium manager brought on the PSG star in the 58th minute, after Florian Wirtz had put Die Mannschaft ahead at the start of the second half. And Vitinha had a big impact, helping Portugal regain control in midfield and eventually win the game 2-1, their first win over the Germans since 2000.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Vitinha was one of the best midfielders in the 2024-25 campaign, forming a formidable midfield trio with Fabian Ruiz and Joao Neves that dominated most opponents. His immense impact helped Les Parisiens achieve a historic clean sweep of trophies, including a fabulous 5-0 Champions League final victory against Inter.

  • WHAT ROBERTO MARTINEZ SAID

Asked after the win against Germany if he would support Vitinha's candidacy to lift the Ballon d'Or, Martinez said: "One thing is what Vitinha is doing this season. For me, without a doubt. He is a player who was essential for PSG to win everything they have won. I think that due to Vitinha's style and effectiveness, he deserves to be awarded the Ballon d'Or."
