'Everything we need!' - Luis Diaz brings 'pace, goals, assists and reliability' to Bayern Munich as Max Eberl explains why they signed Colombian star from Liverpool

Bayern have completed the signing of Diaz from Liverpool, securing the Colombian forward on a long-term deal until June 2029. With key players like Leroy Sane and Thomas Muller moving on, the Bundesliga giants have brought in Diaz to inject pace, creativity and experience into their frontline. Sporting director Eberl revealed the club quickly identified the 28-year-old as their top target, and described him as “everything we need”.

Eberl told reporters: "With the departures of Thomas Müller and Leroy Sane, it was clear that we wanted to do something offensively. We then looked at our squad and saw what we needed and what we wanted. We want pace, we want one-on-ones, we want goals, we want assists, and we want reliability, meaning plenty of playing time ideally. Then we sat down together, worked through our list, checked the feasibility, and very quickly agreed on Luis. He's everything we need."

Despite being a complex negotiation with Liverpool, Eberl praised Bayern’s unified approach and hinted at the rejections they faced before landing Diaz, saying: "It only works if everyone stands together. We've worked diligently on it, from the sporting management to the leadership and the supervisory board. Everyone wanted to make this transfer happen... We were partly amused by who had canceled on us, who was on our list. It was sometimes very, very amusing."

The 28-year-old Colombian international's arrival signals a major upgrade in Die Roten’s frontline following the exits of Sane and Muller and with Jamal Musiala sidelined due to injury. At Liverpool, he registered 41 goals and 23 assists in 148 appearances, lifting four trophies including the Premier League and FA Cup. Diaz also stood out at international level, finishing as joint-top scorer at the 2021 Copa America. He has been handed the No. 14 shirt in Munich.

Bayern will face Lyon, Tottenham and Grasshopper in their next friendlies before they meet Stuttgart in the DFL-Supercup on August 16. It remains to be seen if Nick Woltemade will be part of the attack alongside Diaz or will still be plying his trade at the DFB-Pokal winners.
