  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The New York Jets will be without quarterback Justin Fields in Week 3, as he’s officially been ruled out ahead of their clash with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Head coach Aaron Glenn confirmed Wednesday that Fields remains in concussion protocol after picking up the injury during last weekend's loss to the Buffalo Bills.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Justin Fields’ injury came late in the fourth quarter on a sack from Bills edge rusher Joey Bosa, a hit that also forced a fumble—though New York managed to retain possession while already trailing 30-3.

It capped a rough outing for the 26-year-old quarterback, who connected on just three of 11 passes for 27 yards before exiting. The display was a far cry from his promising Week 1 showing against the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he went 16-for-22 for 216 yards and a touchdown, adding 48 rushing yards and two scores on the ground.

With Fields sidelined, veteran Tyrod Taylor stepped in to finish the game. The backup provided a brief spark, completing seven of 11 attempts for 56 yards and a touchdown as the Jets tried to claw back. However, it wasn’t enough to change the outcome, as Buffalo rolled to a 30-10 victory.

    WHAT NEXT FOR JETS?

Justin Fields arrived in New York this offseason with a two-year, $40 million contract and the expectation of solidifying himself as the Jets’ long-term answer under center. After being shipped out of Chicago, he made six starts with the Pittsburgh Steelers last year before ultimately giving way to Russell Wilson once the veteran recovered from injury.

The Jets brought Fields aboard to be their full-time starter in 2025, but his concussion has temporarily put that plan on ice. The hope is he won’t be sidelined for long, though the timing is far from ideal.

Until then, the keys to the offense fall to Tyrod Taylor, a 15-year veteran who has built a reputation as one of the league’s most reliable No. 2 quarterbacks. Taylor has the poise and experience to keep the Jets’ attack functional, but his first test won’t be a cakewalk. He’ll be staring down a relentless Tampa Bay front that just gave rookie C.J. Stroud and the Texans’ offense all sorts of problems on Monday night.
