Premier League Best Goals GFXGOAL

A Kevin De Bruyne special, Reiss Nelson's clutch volley & the 21 best goals of the 2022-23 Premier League season - ranked

As Manchester City's title party continues, it's time to look back on a season that has spoiled fans across the country with heart-stopping moments, high drama and controversy right from the very start. If there were still any lingering doubts over the Premier League's status as the best division in Europe, they have been erased emphatically over the past 12 months.

The trophy is heading back to the Etihad Stadium for a third successive season, which is a just reward for English football's top scorers. Arsenal put up a great challenge, but City have shown they remain a class above with their form down the finishing stretch.

Elsewhere, we've seen Manchester United regain their lost spark under Erik ten Hag, while Newcastle have successfully broken up the monopoly of the traditional top six. Their rise has coincided with a dramatic decline from Chelsea, who will finish behind surprise packages Brighton, Aston Villa and Brentford.

At the bottom of the table, Southampton are destined to fall into the Championship after an 11-year stay in the top flight. Leeds, Everton and Leicester have also disappointed, but all 20 teams have played their part in a 2022-23 campaign that will live long in the memory - mainly because of the quality of the goals on show.

A large portion have been scored by City's record-smashing frontman Erling Haaland, while his team-mate Kevin De Bruyne and Tottenham's Son Heung-min have been among the usual suspects when it comes to crashing home spectacular long-range efforts. But there have been plenty from unlikely sources, too.

GOAL has ranked the 21 finest goals scored this season below. Sit back, relax, and enjoy...

  • 21Jacob Murphy (Newcastle vs Everton)

First up is probably the easiest goal Jacob Murphy will ever score in his career. The winger's simple finish to wrap up a thumping 4-1 win for Newcastle was unremarkable, but Alexander Isak's assist deserves recognition.

The Swede picked up the ball on the halfway line before sprinting all the way down the left flank and facing up three Everton defenders. He then showed off dazzling footwork to turn them inside out while somehow keeping the ball in play, and had the awareness to cap it all off with a poked pass to the back post where Murphy was waiting.

Every Newcastle player ran to Isak to celebrate, highlighting just how special his run was. We haven't stopped replaying it since.

  • 20Kevin De Bruyne (Man City vs Brighton)

City's latest title charge got off to a slow start as they struggled to find their rhythm, and Brighton provided another stern test when they arrived at the Etihad in October. An Erling Haaland brace put the hosts in command, but Leandro Trossard brought the Seagulls back into it early in the second half.

Pep Guardiola's side needed a moment of inspiration to close out the game, and De Bruyne duly obliged. Bernardo Silva was the architect as he glided through to the edge of the box before pulling the ball back for the Belgian, who then took a perfect first touch to set himself for a shot.

De Bruyne's curling effort flew past Robert Sanchez, despite the Brighton keeper being at full stretch. The way City's midfield maestro is able to put so much pace on the ball with his instep while still controlling the direction of his shots continues to defy logic. Sensational.

  • 19Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool vs Bournemouth)

After their superhuman push for a quadruple in 2021-22, Liverpool suffered a serious hangover at the start of their latest campaign. Jurgen Klopp's men drew their opening two games before losing to arch-rivals Manchester United, and had no margin for error left when welcoming Bournemouth to Anfield.

The Reds stopped the rot with a devastating attacking display that saw them storm to a 9-0 win - equalling the biggest-ever margin of victory in Premier League history. Luis Diaz and Harvey Elliott were among those to score impressive goals, but the pick of the bunch came from Trent Alexander Arnold.

The right-back played a neat one-two with Roberto Firmino that opened up space for him some 25 yards from goal, and he let fly. Alexander-Arnold is known for his clean ball striking, and this was right up there with his very best as his shot rocketed past a helpless Mark Travers in the blink of an eye.

  • 18Erling Haaland (Man City vs Southampton)

Haaland has set unprecedented new standards of excellence in his first season of Premier League football. The former Borussia Dortmund man has proven himself as a master poacher with a staggering return of 36 goals from 35 appearances.

He made many of those goals look easy by getting himself in the right place to apply the finishing touch, but he also has something spectacular in his locker. Haaland lit up City's 4-1 thrashing of Southampton with another brace, and executed a brilliant bicycle kick for his second.

Jack Grealish teed up the Norwegian, who had enough time to take the ball down before shooting. But he couldn't resist an acrobatic attempt that caught Gavin Bazunu off guard in the Southampton net. This is Haaland's world, and we're all just living in it.

  • 17Willian (Fulham vs Nottingham Forest)

Willian is now a Premier League veteran, with 285 appearances to his name across spells at Chelsea, Arsenal and Fulham. The Brazilian has never been prolific, but a large portion of his 43 goals have been memorable due to his ability to find the net from all angles.

Fulham fans were treated to a Willian special in their 2-0 win against Nottingham Forest in February, as he opened the scoring with a sublime solo goal. Forest had eight men behind the ball when it broke for him eight yards out, but he was able to bamboozle one defender with a slick dummy before picking his spot.

Willian somehow whipped his shot into the top corner, despite the best efforts of a Forest player standing on the line. Invention, accuracy and execution of the highest order.

  • 16Demarai Gray (Everton vs Man City)

Everton have not had much to celebrate over the past 12 months amid another gruelling relegation battle. But they are one of the few sides that have managed to get something from the Etihad this term.

City were left rueing missed chances after a 1-1 draw against the Toffees in December, with Demarai Gray stealing a point for the visitors with their only shot on target. In truth, the 26-year-old was given far too much space as he ran from the centre circle all the way through to City's box.

Some questionable defending from Manuel Akanji helped him out too, but Gray's eventual shot was right out of the top drawer. Ederson could only watch on in awe as the ball arrowed into the side netting in a jaw-dropping moment that completely silenced the City faithful.

  • 15Ivan Toney (Brentford vs Leeds)

Ivan Toney's season has been marred by his eight-month ban for breaching betting rules, but his goals lifted Brentford to within touching distances of European qualification. Only Haaland and Harry Kane can better his tally of 20, with his best performance coming in a thumping 5-2 home win over Leeds.

The England international scored a stunning hat-trick to help sink the Whites, and his second was a thing of beauty. After a very short run-up, he managed to rifle a 20-yard free-kick straight into the top corner.

Toney wasn't previously known for his dead ball prowess, but this was the moment he solidified his status as one of the best all-round marksmen in English football.

  • 14Reiss Nelson (Arsenal vs Bournemouth)

Arsenal's re-emergence as title contenders was underpinned by a core group of exciting young talent, with Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli among those to play key roles. Reiss Nelson once fell into the same bracket, but has yet to earn a regular place in the Gunners' starting XI.

The 23-year-old was, however, the man who came up trumps when Mikel Arteta's side needed it most in March. Nelson had only seen 64 minutes of Premier League action when he came on as a second-half substitute against Bournemouth at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal had battled back from two goals down but were on the verge of dropping valuable points seven minutes into stoppage time as the ball fell to Nelson on the edge of box. He then proved to be the coolest man in the stadium, knocking it down before smashing a half volley into the far side of the net, sparking wild scenes of celebration.

The goal ensured the Gunners preserved their five-point lead over City with 12 matches left to play at the time. Oh what might have been.

  • 13Matheus Nunes (Wolves vs Chelsea)

Chelsea have had a miserable campaign, and not even the return of a club legend could spark a change in fortune. Frank Lampard's first game as interim manager ended in a 1-0 loss at Wolves, with Matheus Nunes grabbing the only goal of the game.

It was one that highlights exactly why Matheus is reportedly high up on Liverpool's list of summer transfer targets. The Portuguese midfielder only had one thing on his mind when Kalidou Koulibaly's weak header fell his way on the far side of the box.

Nunes unleashed a thunderbolt of a volley to beat Kepa Arrizabalaga, who only began to dive after the ball had already zoomed past him. Poetry in motion.

  • 12Son Heung-min (Tottenham vs Leicester)

By Son Heung-min's standards, the 2022-23 campaign has been a huge disappointment. The South Korean has only scored 10 goals in the Premier League - his lowest tally since his first year on Spurs' books.

He kicked off with an eight-game scoreless streak in all competitions, and was left on the bench for the visit of Leicester in September. But when Son was introduced to the action on the hour mark, he was ready to silence his critics.

He ended his drought with an outstanding individual effort, dribbling into the final third before producing an unstoppable curling effort to beat Danny Ward at his near post. Son then scored another stunner before completing his hat-trick to seal a thumping 6-2 win. Form is temporary, class is permanent.

  • 11Youri Tielemans (Leicester vs Wolves)

Youri Tielemans' three-year stay at the King Power Stadium will come to an end this summer. The Belgian has established himself as one of the most consistent performers in the Premier League during that time, which is why he won't be short of suitors.

He hasn't been able to prevent Leicester falling towards the drop zone this season, but he still managed to make his mark once again. It was Tielemans who opened the floodgates for the Foxes' biggest win of the campaign at Wolves back in October.

The midfielder showed off his superb technique to crash a first-time volley into the roof of the net from just outside the box, leaving the home fans stunned. Leicester went on to win 4-0, and although it proved to be a false dawn, Tielemans' strike will live long in the memory.

  • 10Antony (Man Utd vs Man City)

Antony instantly had a target on his back after joining Manchester United from Ajax due to his £85 million price tag, but he looked to be worth every penny after scoring in each of his first three Premier League games.

His second came in a humbling 6-3 loss at Manchester City, which gave United a brief glimmer of hope after a nightmare first half. Antony managed to salvage an under-hit cross-field pass with an expert first touch to get away from Grealish, and then shimmied onto his left foot to get a shot away.

From the moment it left Antony's foot, the ball was destined to find the back of the net. The Brazilian has proven to be a frustrating player since his bright start, but this stunning effort served as a warning to all defenders not to let him get into space on his favoured left side.

  • 9Kieran Trippier (Newcastle vs Man City)

Back in the first month of the campaign, Newcastle solidified their status as top-four hopefuls with a superb performance against Man City at St James' Park. The two sides played out a thrilling 3-3 draw, with the Magpies coming back from an early Ilkay Gundogan goal to lead 2-1 heading in at half-time.

Trippier made it three in the 54th minute with the best goal of the game, finding the top bins with a fierce free-kick from 25 yards. The England international took it from a central position, which usually gives the opposition goalkeeper a better chance of covering both sides of the net, but Ederson's dive was ultimately just for show.

City battled back to earn a point, but Trippier deservedly claimed most of the headlines for a strike that showed exactly why he is considered a set-piece expert. Pinpoint.

  • 8Solly March (Brighton vs Southampton)

Solly March has played his way into contention for an England call-up with his showings for Brighton this term, recording seven goals and seven assists in 33 Premier League appearances. His standout effort came in a 3-1 against Southampton at St Mary's, which saw the Seagulls move into the top seven.

There didn't appear to be much on when March received a pass on the right flank, but he cut back inside past two defenders before hammering home a shot with remarkable power. He struck the ball so sweetly despite seemingly running away from goal, and it accelerated into the top corner like a missile.

March is now in the prime of his career, and if he can continue conjuring up efforts like this next season, it will be impossible for Gareth Southgate to keep overlooking him.

  • 7Michael Olise (Crystal Palace vs Man Utd)

At one point, Manchester United looked like genuine title contenders. Ten Hag's team had won nine on the bounce ahead of a trip to Crystal Palace in January, and could have moved into second with another victory.

They were minutes away from collecting another three points too, thanks to a 44th-minute Bruno Fernandes goal. But there was a sting in the tail in the first minute of stoppage time, and it came from Michael Olise.

The France Under-21 international had a huge task to find the net from a 25-yard free-kick that was placed towards the far corner of the box. But he did exactly that, with the ball crashing in off the crossbar after bypassing De Gea.

Ten Hag's face was the picture of disbelief. United blew plenty of chances to extend their lead, and Olise delivered the ultimate punishment with the best goal of his fledgling career.

  • 6Youri Tielemans (Leicester vs Everton)

Tielemans somehow managed to better his stunning goal against Wolves when Leicester faced Everton at Goodison Park in November. The Foxes were probing for an opening just before the half-time whistle, and James Maddison played a pass back to Tielemans in the hope he could provide a spark.

The Belgium international used his knee to caress the ball down, setting himself up perfectly for an audacious volley. He connected with the ball perfectly as it dropped, and his shot dipped and swerved on its way into the far side of Jordan Pickford's goal.

Tielemans wonder strike set Leicester on their way to a 2-0 triumph, and further emphasised just how deadly he can be from long range.

  • 5Kevin De Bruyne (Man City vs Leicester)

De Bruyne's second entry on the list gave City a vital win at Leicester heading into November, and it will likely be remembered as the best free-kick of the entire season. From almost 30 yards out, he ran up to the ball almost square on, but used his side foot rather than his laces to strike the ball in trademark fashion.

No one in world football can hit a ball quite like De Bruyne. On this occasion it flew up and over the wall in a flash and found its mark with the aid of the post.

Leicester keeper Ward couldn't get anywhere near it, and De Bruyne's casual celebration only rubbed salt in his wounds. Unstoppable.

  • 4Allan Saint-Maximin (Newcastle vs Wolves)

Allan Saint-Maximin is a showman. He might lose the ball too cheaply and make the wrong decision now and again, but when one of his tricks comes off, it's a joy to behold.

A deadly right foot is among the weapons at his disposal, as Wolves found out to their peril back in August. The Wanderers thought they'd grabbed an impressive 1-0 win over Newcastle heading into the 90th minute at Molineux, but Saint-Maximin had other ideas.

Hwang Hee-chan was made to pay for a clumsy clearance that looped Saint-Maximin's way just outside the penalty area. The Frenchman took the ball out of the air with an outrageous first-time volley that arrowed straight into the bottom corner, leaving Wolves supporters heartbroken.

Saint-Maximin has been linked with a move away from Newcastle, but it would be a huge shame for the league to lose a maverick that can deliver breathtaking moments like this.

  • 3Ilkay Gundogan (Man City vs Everton)

Haaland and De Bruyne have grabbed most of the headlines for City during their latest march to Premier League glory, but Ilkay Gundogan has once again been their most dependable asset in the middle of the park.

He broke the deadlock at Goodison Park after a dazzling piece of improvisation that saw him control a Riyad Mahrez cross with his knee before flicking the ball past Pickford. As he has done so often over the years, Gundogan made something out of nothing.

He would go on to double his account with a beautifully weighted free-kick to wrap up a 3-0 victory for City, but his first goal was the real standout. Exquisite.

  • 2Julio Enciso (Brighton vs Chelsea)

One week after Wolves downed Lampard's hapless Chelsea side, the Blues conceded another astonishing winning goal at home to Brighton. Paraguayan forward Julio Enciso was the man to deal the decisive blow this time, as the Seagulls earned a 2-1 comeback victory at Stamford Bridge.

In truth, Enciso's goal was worthy of winning any game. His 30-yard shot could only be described as a screamer, one that would get the better of any goalkeeper in world football.

You almost felt sorry for Kepa as he flung himself to his right to try and get close to the ball, as he must have known instantly he was fighting a losing battle. Slow motion replays captured just how clean and crisp Enciso's strike was - and it felt like something out of a video game.

The 19-year-old has a bright future ahead of him, but it will take something truly outrageous for him to ever better this sumptuous effort against the Blues.

  • 1Miguel Almiron (Newcastle vs Fulham)

And so we finally come to our winner. Miguel Almiron's first goal in Newcastle's 4-1 win at Fulham. It may even have a case for being one of the best goals in the Premier League's entire history. When you factor in the level of difficulty and imagination, there are certainly not many better that come to mind.

Almiron played a pass into Bruno Guimaraes from the right flank before bursting into the box for a return. Guimaraes found his team-mate with a looping through ball, but it initially seemed to be on Almiron's weaker right foot.

That is, until the Paraguayan smartly slowed down to shift his weight as the ball dropped over his shoulder. Almiron met it perfectly on his left foot, and his sumptuous stabbed volley flew over the head of Bernd Leno.

All the players on the pitch seemed to stop for a moment after it went in, as if they couldn't believe what had just happened. We're still rubbing our eyes in disbelief to this day. Take a bow, Miguel!
