Son Heung-min: The Journey So Far

Son Heung-min began his career in his native South Korea with FC Seoul. His father, Son Woong-jung, was a retired footballer turned manager who trained him personally. Through a Korean FA Youth Project, Son, who displayed incredible potential in Korea, moved to Germany to join Hamburger SV's academy at 16.

He learned German to understand the coaches and endear himself to the fans by watching episodes of SpongeBob Square Pants, according to his agent Thies Bliemeister. Such excellent dedication won him a permanent move with the club at the age of 18. Son became their youngest goalscorer when he fired one in against Koln.

After returning 12 goals in the 2012/13 season as a starter, he became their most expensive transfer departure at that time when he signed for Bayer Leverkusen. He honed his craft as an efficient left-winger who could play anywhere across the frontline thanks to his two-footedness. He became the most expensive Asian player in history when he signed for Tottenham in 2015.

What followed was history, as Son made himself a fan favourite. His partnership with Harry Kane under Mauricio Pochettino almost handed Tottenham a Champions League trophy in 2019, with Spurs eventually losing to Liverpool in the final in Madrid. Son won a Puskas Award for his sensational solo goal against Burnley by dribbling almost the length of the pitch, gliding past several markers before coolly slotting home. A fantastic campaign in 2021/22 saw him share the Golden Boot with Mohamed Salah with 23 goals.

Son became the club captain following Hugo Lloris and Harry Kane's departure in 2023. He was a veteran now, and the youngsters at the club looked up to him. Major silverware with Tottenham eluded him until 2025, when he lifted the Europa League.

Son wasn't a starter anymore due to his injury struggles, but he did a stellar job off the bench, including a cameo against Man United in that Europa League final. Son believed that his time with the club was up and announced a shock departure in a press conference while touring South Korea.

He received a hero's reception as the fans and club alike honoured his decision. His next club was finalised soon as he chose LAFC. It comes as a major coup for the 2022 MLS Cup winners and underlines their ambition to compete for major titles. Son will improve them almost instantaneously as he gets ready for an exciting new chapter in an already great career.

Son captained his nation at the 2022 World Cup. He is an Asian Games Gold medallist and would love to have a successful World Cup in the United States in 2026.
