Wrexham owner Rob McElhenney responds after being asked to 'do the right thing' following fan's ban for celebrating promotion on pitch

The Red Dragons celebrated promotion to League One following a 6-0 win over Forest Green Rovers last weekend at the Racecourse. At the full-time whistle, fans spilled onto the pitch, basking in the glow of a second straight promotion. But according to a Wrexham fan, one supporter has allegedly been handed a two-year ban for holding a flare at the ground - something co-owner McElhenney is investigating.

X user (P) Beardy tweeted on Tuesday: "(Always Sunny in Philadelphia actor) Charlie Day drinks alcohol in view of the pitch, which is a criminal offence, people laugh and find it charming. Ryan Barnett holds a flare on the pitch while being held aloft on fans shoulders, it’s called iconic and he’s a hero. (He is btw ❤️). Fan takes a photo on the pitch in celebration of promotion with his son holding a flare, two-year ban. Why are fans being punished so heavily yet others seem to get away with it, are fans now second-class citizens to the club? Do the right thing."

When McElhenney thanked him for raising this matter, the Wrexham fan called him a "gentleman".

Wrexham backed up their National League title triumph with another promotion after finishing in the top three spots in League Two. They have got their thanks, in no small part, to the backing of co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney - who are, frankly, adored in Wrexham. And the fact they are so visible and care so much about this community is partly why there is so much trust and support around the club right now.

While McElhenney investigates this matter, his Wrexham side round off their season with an away trip to Crewe Alexandra on Saturday, followed by a home clash against league leaders Stockport County on April 27.
