Bad news for Wrexham! James McClean to miss Accrington clash after receiving late international call-up

The 34-year-old midfielder was called up by Ireland manager Stephen Kenny for the upcoming Euro 2024 qualifier against the Netherlands. With injuries sidelining Will Smallbone and Festy Ebosele, McClean is now in contention for Saturday's match in Amsterdam.

McClean will now miss Wrexham's League Two fixture against Accrington Stanley on Saturday, which means manager Phil Parkinson will have to look for alternatives on the wing. Their opponents head into the fixture at Wham Stadium on the back of two defeats, and the Welsh club will hope to pile more misery by getting the three points to keep pace with league leaders Stockport.

McClean appeared in Ireland's previous Euro qualifier against the Dutch in September, when they went down by a 2-1 margin at the Aviva Stadium. This sudden call-up extends his international career by one more match, as he was already set to hang up his boots following the friendly against New Zealand on November 21.

McClean has over 100 international caps with the Irish national team and will be eager to end his international stint on a high by winning the two matches against the Netherlands and New Zealand respectively. He popped up with two assists against Gibraltar back in June and would hope to produce more of the same to add to his tally of 11 goals and six assists for his country.
