Van Gaal, who was in charge of the Netherlands, has suggested that Argentina were assisted en route to claiming the most prestigious prize in football. His Dutch side were beaten by Messi and Co at the quarter-final stage – in a game that saw 16 yellow cards and one red handed out before being settled in a penalty shootout – with the veteran coach telling NOS of the final outcome: “I don't really want to say much about it. When you see how Argentina gets the goals and how we get the goals, and how some Argentina players overstepped the mark and were not punished, then I think it was a premeditated game.”
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Former Barcelona and Manchester United boss Van Gaal went on to say when asked to clarify his comments: “I mean everything I say. That Messi should become world champion? I think so, yes.”
