Will Lionel Messi grace Inter Miami’s new stadium? Opening pushed back as David Beckham co-owned MLS outfit work on 25,000-seater venue

The Herons, who are co-owned by Manchester United and England legend David Beckham, had been hoping to move into a new home from 2025. Argentine superstar Messi is contracted to the MLS outfit through that calendar year.

Construction on Inter Miami’s new ground – which is set in a 131-acre site that will also include commercial retail, entertainment, office and hotel space – began in August 2023. According to the Miami Herald, a potential completion date of December 2025 is being pushed back.

The Herons have said in a message sent out to season card holders that the 2025 season is “is expected to be our FINAL season here at Chase Stadium before moving to the new stadium in Miami”. Club CEO Jorge Mas has previously said of the ambitious project: “With Inter Miami my family set out to build something truly transformational. In just four years we have changed the perception worldwide of American soccer. As we commence construction of Miami Freedom Park that same vision guides us. In creating a multifaceted space, we will set a new standard of what sport complexes can be. We look forward to delivering a food and entertainment destination for families to enjoy year-round. I can’t wait to welcome our fans to our state-of-the-art stadium and hear the chants as Messi and your Inter Miami players take the pitch for the first time in 2025.”

There is still a chance that Messi will step foot on that field as his contract – which includes equity in the club once heading into retirement – includes an extension option for 2026. No indication has been offered as to whether that option will be taken up, but there has been talk of the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner playing through to the next World Cup – which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
