Why Newcastle's Carabao Cup clash with Wimbledon has been postponed - explained

The Magpies were scheduled to travel on Tuesday to take on League Two side AFC Wimbledon on Tuesday in a Carabao Cup third-round clash at the Cherry Red Records Stadium. However, the match, which was supposed to kick off at 7:45 pm BST, has now been postponed due to the poor condition of the venue.

Due to overnight torrential downpours, the Cherry Red Records Stadium saw extensive flooding. A sinkhole was spotted near the touchline on Monday while walkways were completely flooded. Under such circumstances, it was impossible to conduct the game in just a day.

The official statement from the Premier League side read, "Newcastle United's Carabao Cup third-round tie at AFC Wimbledon has been postponed following extensive overnight flooding at the Cherry Red Records Stadium."

Eddie Howe's side will now be back in action on Saturday in the Premier League as they take on reigning champions Manchester City at St. James' Park.
