West Ham make decision on Michail Antonio future after devastating car crash that left Jamaica international needing surgery

According to The Athletic, the Hammers have made little progress in negotiations with the player over a new contract and as things stand he will leave as a free agent. Antonio joined the club from Nottingham Forest in 2015, and over the last 10 years has appeared in 323 matches across all competitions, scoring 83 goals. He also played an important role in their Europa Conference League success in the 2022-23 campaign.

The Jamaican international had a near-death experience last December when his Ferrari FF collided with a tree. Antonio had to be cut from the wreckage of his vehicle before being airlifted to a hospital and undergoing surgery on a lower-leg fracture. After the initial photographs of his car wreckage went viral on social media, people initially wondered whether the player had survived.

The 35-year-old forward stepped onto the pitch for the first time since his accident in Jamaica’s narrow 1-0 defeat to Guatemala in their opening game of the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup, earlier this month.

It remains to be seen if the Hammers will change their mind and offer a new contract to the player in the next few days. For now, it looks like Antonio will have to look for a new club to return to the playing field in the 2025-26 campaign.
