The US Open is now within touching distance, and it won't be long until the most talented tennis players on the planet are performing wonders on the hard courts of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. The prestigious tournament explodes into life on August 24 and we're guaranteed to be treated to some magical and memorable moments during the Flushing Meadows fortnight. Jannik Sinner is the man of the moment and arrives in the Big Apple in fine fettle. The Italian sensation reached his fourth consecutive Grand Slam final when winning his first-ever Wimbledon title in London last month. However, the US Open has proved to be the most unpredictable of all the major titles, and a men’s champion hasn’t successfully defended the crown since Roger Federer sealed his fifth win in a row in New York back in 2008.
The women’s singles competition has also been hard to call recently, with nine different winners in the past ten years. American legend Serena Williams was the last woman to go back-to-back when winning her sixth and last US Open crown in 2014. Serena tops the women’s honours board alongside another former American favourite, Chris Evert. Evert would lift her six trophies aloft within 8 years (1975-1982). Coco Gauff, Madison Keys, Jessica Pegula, and Naomi Osaka are just a handful of Stars and Stripes hopefuls who will fancy their chances of giving the home crowds something to cheer about this time around.
So what about the American men? Despite losing in straight sets to Sinner in last year’s US Open final, Taylor Fritz had gone where no other American men’s player had been for almost 20 years. Astonishingly, before the 2024 edition, there hadn’t been a homegrown player to cheer on in the men’s singles final since Andy Roddick lost to Roger Federer in 2006. Three years before that defeat, A-Rod had been the darling of the Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd, after beating Carlos Alcaraz’s current coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero, to claim the crown. That 2003 success was the last time an American man topped the podium at the US Open.

However, there have been plenty for us fervent United States fans to whoop and holler about at Flushing Meadows over the years. Between 1974 and 2003, there would be a total of 17 American winners of the men's singles at the US Open. During that period, Jimmy Connors and Pete Sampras both won 5 championships apiece, John McEnroe claimed four titles, Andre Agassi two, and, of course, Andy Roddick. Taylor Fritz looks to be one of the leading American hopefuls once again this year, along with Ben Shelton, Frances Tiafoe, and Tommy Paul. Can any of those last the distance this time around?
As well as a Sunday start, there is also another novel tournament twist this year, with the Mixed Doubles event taking place during the build-up week, also known as ‘Fan Week’. The Mixed Doubles action gets underway on Tuesday, August 19, and climaxes the following day (Wednesday, August 20), with a cool $1 million going to the winners.

Where is the US Open played?

The USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center is a complex of tennis courts, including stadiums, that has hosted the US Open tennis tournament since 1978. It is located within Flushing Meadows–Corona Park in Queens, New York City. The facility has 22 courts inside its 46.5 acres and 12 in the adjoining park. The complex's three stadiums are among the largest tennis stadiums in the world; Arthur Ashe Stadium tops the global list with a capacity of 23,200.
The Tennis Center is open to the public for play, except during the US Open, junior, and wood-racket competitions. Formerly called the USTA National Tennis Center, the facility was renamed in 2006 in honour of Billie Jean King, who won the US Open on four occasions.
