The former Manchester United winger was in pre-season action for Ligue 1 giants against Dutch third-tier minnows Excelsior Maassluis. Greenwood proved to be a class above in that contest.

Having landed a share of the Ligue 1 Golden Boot in 2024-25 alongside Paris Saint-Germain’s Ballon d’Or contending talisman Ousmane Dembele, it has not taken long for Greenwood to get back in the goalscoring groove this summer.

His treble against Excelsior Maassluis highlighted what the 23-year-old forward is all about, with his ball-carrying ability and unerring finishing prowess allowing a decisive contribution to be made in a 5-0 win.

Greenwood’s first goal was the pick of the bunch as he drifted past a couple of helpless defenders before rolling into the bottom corner. Said effort was struck with his left foot, before using his right to register a second of the game. More quick thinking allowed him to avoid a desperate dive before calmly completing his hat-trick.

Transfer speculation does not appear to be a distraction for Greenwood at present, with La Liga heavyweights Atletico Madrid being credited with interest once again. If any deal is done in the current window, then United will be due 50 per cent of any fee generated.
