It was a lacklustre first half from Carlo Ancelotti's men in Leipzig but a moment of individual brilliance from Diaz put their nose in front just after the resumption of play. The Spanish forward twisted and turned to get away from several opposition defenders including David Raum and Lukas Klostermann before opening himself to set up a sensational curling finish into the far side netting.

Diaz made his way into the starting XI as an injured Bellingham could not travel to Germany with an ankle issue. The former Manchester City player copied Bellingham's open-arm celebration after finding the net and the England international did not miss out on reacting to his heroics within minutes after the goal.

He wrote on X: "Oh my god Brahim!!!😳😳😳".

Before the game, Ancelotti asserted that Los Blancos have enough squad depth to cope without Bellingham against Leipzig - and the manager stands vindicated due to Diaz's stunning effort. The Englishman will face at least two weeks on the sidelines which means that he will miss the trip to Vallecas for a contest with Rayo Vallecano on Sunday, followed by an encounter against Sevilla on February 25.
