USMNT star Matt Turner in ‘not good enough’ Premier League admission as ex-Arsenal & Nottingham Forest goalkeeper keeps transfer door ajar

The 31-year-old goalkeeper decided to go chasing the “dream” in 2022 when completing a move from the New England Revolution in MLS to Emirates Stadium in the English top-flight.

Fierce competition for places restricted Turner to just seven appearances for the Gunners, with none of those coming in the English top-flight. He did make his bow at that level when joining Forest in 2023, but that switch soon turned sour.

Turner was dumped by the Reds following some high-profile errors, leading to a loan spell at Crystal Palace being taken in before eventually returning to New England via a transfer to French giants Lyon.

Turner has told FIFA’s official website of his experiences in the Premier League and why there may yet be more to come: “Overall, I enjoyed my time in England, I had some successes, especially that first season in Arsenal. Playing and training with Aaron Ramsdale every day was amazing.

“Arsenal were so close to winning the Premier League and I got such a taste of what was necessary to success in the Premier League on a consistent basis because I was working with one of the best managers in football right now [Mikel Arteta]. That was an experience I hold near and dear to my heart.

“Obviously, at (Forest) I'm self-aware to know that I wasn't good enough. I had some really great moments but also some tough ones as well and the club had to make a change. They brought in a keeper who ended up on the PFA Team of the Year (Matz Sels).

“I got the full experience and from top to bottom those jobs are super-competitive. My only regret is that I didn't show (my skills) consistently enough but I did achieve my dream in playing there. I learned a lot and a lot of lessons I can take with me for the future.

“I would love to go back there some day, it's not a closed chapter for me. If I put in some consistent performances maybe I can get back to England and try my luck again.”

Turner will be hoping to rediscover a lost spark back in the United States, with another stint in Massachusetts allowing him to find form and regular game time ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
