As the situation escalated, the referee was left with no choice but to order both sets of players to retreat to the safety of the dressing rooms in the 33rd minute. By this point, the pitch had been completely overtaken by rival factions. Images and footage from the stadium showed fans charging onto the grass holding sticks, chairs and other objects as they launched them at their rivals.

One of the most concerning reports to emerge from the chaos involved America de Cali goalkeeper Jean Fernandes. The shot-stopper claimed that he was physically assaulted by a supporter while he was receiving medical treatment on the ground.

Fernandes later took to social media to highlight the incident, reposting a clip of the altercation to provide evidence of the attack. He expressed his outrage at the lack of protection afforded to the players, writing: "This is the moment when I am on the ground, and the fan who enters the pitch kicks my head."

Fernandes did not hold back in his assessment of the decision to finish the game under such volatile conditions. The goalkeeper further added to his social media post, stating: "It was disrespectful to make us carry on playing. They did nothing."

The fallout from the match has continued long after the final whistle, with America de Cali manager David Gonzalez standing firmly behind his goalkeeper's version of events. Speaking to the press after the match, Gonzalez vented his frustration, saying: "They haven’t even talked about a fan assaulting our goalkeeper.
